On the Farm:

As temperatures begin to cool, the farm comes to life with the harvest, the spectacular colors of the region's fall foliage, and local festivals. This is truly a time for you to  visit, and escape from the heat, hustle and bustle of the city. You can enjoy late season berry picking, while taking a stroll through the woods. Labor Day weekend marks the harvest of elderberries, a source of jam and wine. The farm buzzes with the activities associated with canning jams, jellies, and vegetables from the garden. Apple harvests go into full swing on the farm and at nearby orchards they offer fresh cider and give you the chance to pick fresh apples from the tree.

Local Festivals:

More than any other season fall offers a bounty of local festivals.  In early September, the Farmer's and Threshermen's Jubilee just up the road in New Centerville offers you an in depth look at how farming was done in the days of steam powered machinery. Daily displays of farming and lumbering, using the steam-powered equipment, show farm life as it was over a hundred years ago. Held each fall during the same weekend as the Jubilee is Somerset’s Mountain Craft Days. There you will find reenactments in truly historical settings. Craftsmen show and sell their wares, which allow visitors the opportunity to take a piece of history home with them. Another favorite is the Whiskey Rebellion held in Berlin, a historical reference to a local uprising of citizens, who produced their own liquor, being forced to pay taxes to the government.

In early October, the popular Springs Folk festival offers another look of how our forefather worked and played. Pa. Dutch foods and music and crafts abound. The Pumpkin Festival in Confluence showcases local artisans and food vendors. Fort Ligioner Days focuses on the life in and around the area during our nations revolutionary war era. Battle reenactments and other activities of the era are highlighted during this festival.

Outdoor Adventures:

Fall provides many of the same outdoor adventures as summer. One exception might be river rafting and kayaking as water levels in the local rivers are typically at their lowest point in the year. Some outdoor activities might require you wear a light jacket or sweater as cooler temperatures prevail and even an early snowfall can catch us off guard.

Hiking and/or biking on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP)  is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with your family while viewing the fall foliage.

If your a hunter; hunting begins in mid-October and the farm and open areas nearby can provide an excellent day in the field for small game. Black bear hunting has really blossomed in the area, the week of Thanksgiving opens the 3-day season. Approximately 50 black bears are annually taken in the county during the short season. The 2-week period after Thanksgiving has the hunters busy attempting to bag a trophy deer.

Local Destinations:

Fall foliage is the mainstay of destinations in this season in our mountainous region of Pennsylvania. Driving the rural countryside and viewing the spectacular colors provided by our variety of hardwoods along with historic sites and covered bridges is an extraordinary experience. We have driving maps available to our guests to assist you in finding the most scenic and interesting routs.
